WDPCHS Newsletter - March 2020

. Posted in World Databse for Pediatric and Congenital Heart SurgeryHits: 4024

We want to first acknowledge that this is a very unsettling time for the world right now, so we want to wish all of you the best and to be safe and healthy during these uncertain times. We will come together as a group and will be a stronger global community after this.

As we enter a new year, we would like to extend a ‘Thank You’ to all the members of the World Database for Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery (WDPCHS) for your continued efforts and hard work in this important international project. The WDPCHS continues to grow each year; now with 68 hospitals in 22 countries enrolling a collective 27,470 surgeries. The WDPCHS Web Based Data Entry system has undergone a number of enhancements throughout 2019 and the beginning of 2020, including the ability to translate the data entry forms into languages other than English, monthly surgery count verification tables, and added question & answer options to data entry forms. All these changes are noted on our World Database Website as well as changes since our inception in 2017; World Database Website We will continue make enhancements to the web based data entry system in 2020 and we welcome all feedback and suggestions.

Sincerely,

James K. Kirklin, Database Chair
James D. St. Louis, Database Vice Chair/Secretary

World Database Committee 2020-2021

The World Database Committee comprises a group of individuals that have dedicated their time and effort to the mission of the World Database, both in action and submission of patients. The agenda of the committee, through conference calls and sessions held at WSPCHS meetings, will address and provide input into current database issues, while providing insight into future directions of the database. With increase in the number of requests for data and the analysis for this data for specific QI projects, the committee will also serve to review and approve such projects.

Web Based Data Entry Updates-Version 1.0.7 (March 9, 2020)

Since the launch of the World Database, six updates have been released to the system. The development team continuously works to enhance the data entry website. We welcome all feedback and suggestions from sites and review these regularly with the database team for system updates.

The most recent revision is now live in the web based data entry system, and the updated forms, form manual, and appendices are available on the website; Data Collection forms. The biggest changes included in this revision are:

System Changes

  • All forms in the data entry system can now be translated into specified languages. A user will need translation permissions to be able to edit and submit any translation. Any user is able to view the translated forms in approved languages. Additional languages for translation will be forthcoming. If you would like to request a user account to perform translations, or request a specific language be added to the list of available languages, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Monthly Surgery Count Verification Table: When you sign in to the database, select the reports tab and a count of surgeries and deaths entered at your center is displayed. Please confirm that this information is correct on a monthly basis.

Form Revisions

  • Added question and answer options to the Follow Up form
  • Added question and answer options to the Demographics form
  • Added question and answer options to the Institutional Practice Details form

Bi-Annual Reports

The Bi-Annual reports have now transitioned from their current layout to a unique and user-friendly approach that has updated graphs and charts in addition to the tabular exhibits.

Additionally, we have begun the work to create a more modern and usable reporting platform that will provide an interactive way of looking at your data in real time. This new reporting system will provide a mechanism for you to compare your center against the aggregate in multiple ways, including advanced visualizations such as dual-axis line graphs, bubble charts, and others. Here are some samples of enhancements distributed in the last reports:
